What is llms.txt? A plain answer for small businesses
Short answer: llms.txt is a short text file at the root of your website (yoursite.com/llms.txt). It sums up your business in plain words for AI tools that choose to read it. It's a proposed standard, not a rule, and Google says you don't need it to show up in its AI answers. It's harmless to have, so we add one for every Care and Grow site. But it's one small piece, not a shortcut.
Where it came from
The idea was proposed in September 2024 at llmstxt.org. Web pages are built for people, with menus, pop-ups and code around the words. An AI tool reading your site has to dig the facts out. llms.txt gives it a clean summary in one place, with links to the pages that matter.
So far it's used mostly for software documentation, where coding tools look for it. The proposal says the same format works for "a business outlining its structure and policies," and that's how a local business would use it.
What goes in one
The format is simple. The only required part is a title with your business name. A good one also has:
- A one- or two-line summary of what you do and where.
- The facts customers ask about: services, service area, hours and how to reach you.
- Links to your main pages, each with a short note on what's there.
Here's an example for a made-up business:
# Example Heating & Air > Family-run heating and air conditioning repair and installation in Stafford, Virginia. Serving Stafford, Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania. ## Services - [AC repair](https://example.com/ac-repair): repairs on most brands - [Furnace installation](https://example.com/furnace): new systems and replacements ## Contact - Phone: (540) 555-0100 - Hours: Monday to Friday, 8 to 5
(Example only. Not a real business.)
Does it actually help?
Honestly, nobody knows how much yet. Here's what we do know:
- Google says you don't need it. Google's guidance for AI Overviews and AI Mode says: "You don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup to appear in these features."
- No major AI company has said its tools use it. It's a proposed standard, and some tools, mostly coding tools, look for it. ChatGPT, Gemini and others haven't confirmed they read it.
- It can't hurt, if it's right. It's a small text file. If it's accurate, the worst case is that nobody reads it.
The basics help more: clear pages that answer real questions, the same name, address and phone everywhere, schema that matches what's on the page, and letting AI tools read your site at all.
The bigger risk: blocking AI tools by accident
Before you worry about llms.txt, check that AI tools can read your site at all. A file called robots.txt tells crawlers what they may read. Some sites block AI crawlers there without the owner knowing, sometimes because of a default setting or an old plugin. If they're blocked, an llms.txt file won't matter.
Check yours
- 1Type yoursite.com/llms.txt into your browser. If you see plain text with your business name and a summary, you have one. If you get an error or your home page, you don't.
- 2If you have one, read it. Is the phone number right? The hours? Does it list services you stopped offering? A wrong file is worse than none.
- 3Type yoursite.com/robots.txt. If you see lines naming AI crawlers (like GPTBot) next to "Disallow: /", ask whoever runs your site why.
How Juhmp handles it
On Care and Grow, we make sure the main AI crawlers are allowed to read your site, and we add an llms.txt file with your real business facts. On Care and Grow, we check it every month along with your broken links, speed and sitemap, and tell you if anything's out of date. On Grow, we also ask AI tools your top questions each month and tell you who gets named.
We won't tell you llms.txt will get you named by ChatGPT. No one can honestly promise that. It's one small, tidy piece of making your facts easy to find. See how we handle AI search.

FAQ
- What is llms.txt?
A short text file on your website that sums up your business in plain words for AI tools that choose to read it. No major AI company has said its tools use it.
- Do I need llms.txt to show up in Google's AI answers?
No. Google says you don't need AI text files or special markup to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Clear pages and accurate facts matter more.
- Is llms.txt the same as robots.txt?
No. robots.txt tells crawlers what they're allowed to read. llms.txt is a summary meant to help AI tools that read it. If robots.txt blocks AI crawlers, llms.txt won't help.
- Can llms.txt hurt my site?
Not if it's accurate. The risk is a file with old hours, services or phone numbers, so keep it up to date.
- Will adding llms.txt get my business named by ChatGPT?
No one can honestly promise that. It's one small piece. We keep your facts clear and easy for AI tools to read, and on Grow we check each month who gets named.
